California Alligator Lizard???

Description:

Approx. 12-16 in. Dark bands of scales along back. Top of head lightish brown. Bottom of head, chin, mouth, light, almost yellowy.

Habitat:

Brushy woodlands Pine-oak forest. Sierra foothills.

Notes:

It tucked its hind legs against the side of its body and slowly pulled itself along with its forearms. I watched it eat a couple termites.

Roughly, this spotting occurred in the proximity of ranges for both Elgaria multicarinata multicarinata - California Alligator Lizard and Elgaria coerulea palmeri - Sierra Alligator Lizard. In reference to the comment about eye color, see http://www.californiaherps.com/lizards/i...

The light eyes make it seem more like a southern alligator lizard.
