A turtle with a shell about 8 or 10 inches across. The coloration was hard to spot, due to the brightness of the sun and my inability to get close, but I believe he was black with the bright stripes of color along the neck that I associate with painted turtles.

There were a number of turtles ranging in size that had climbed out on fallen trees to sun themselves. This was the largest of the bunch that I saw.
