Oncopeltus fasciatus
Groups of insects in all stages of development are commonly found between May and October on common milkweed plants. Mature adults are orange with black rhomboidal spots at both end of a body and a black band in the middle. I spotted this adult happily feeding away on a pod of Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) in a butterfly garden. See nymphs here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/564...
Ranges east of the Rocky Mountains, as far north as Ontario, Canada, but is more abundant in SE US in fields and meadows containing milkweed or dogbane. (Bug Guide says the range is larger: CA-FL-NB-UT)
Spotted on in a backyard flower garden in Kennesaw, GA.
