Tussock Moth Cocoons

Orgyia

Description:

Tan cocoons. Black on one end with random black fibers on surface.

Habitat:

Found on an orange tree.

Notes:

Caterpillars use silk and setae from their bodies to make their cocoons. The setae in the cocoons can retain their toxicity for a year or more. The flightless females stay on their cocoons after emerging. Mate and lay their eggs on the cocoon.

Thanks Ornithoptera. I've seen caterpillars of both species nearby.
