Aggregating Anemone

Anthopleura elegantissima

Description:

The most widespread species of coastal anemone. Green-brown in the middle with red-green tentacles.

Notes:

These anemones host several species of photosynthetic and dinoflagellate algae in their tentacles, column and oral disk. The algae and anemone form a mutualistic relationship, benefitting each other in gas exchange, food intake, and even UVR protection!
