Description:

Size: Has a wingspan of approximately 40mms. Distribution: Found throughout the UK. Months seen: All year round. Habitat: Woodlands, and gardens. Food: Nectar. The caterpillars feed on poplar and willow leaves. Special features: The herald moths' bright orange forewings are always on view to its predators, so in an effort to conceal itself from predators during the daytime it rests among dead leaves. It is one of the few noctuid moths that spends the winter in the moth stage, hibernating in out buildings and caves.
