Steven--I think you are right. I opened the photo in a larger version and could make out the vague white crescent on the front of the face. What threw me was the size of the bill. These guys have really big bills! So big, in fact, that ducks never crossed my mind as a possibility. So, I'm concurring with you. Pink-eared ducks--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink-eared_Duck

Im pretty certain they are a large flock of Pink-eared ducks. Good spotting, ive never seen them in a large flock

Hello gordon, they were relative small...and from a fresh water lake, i think there were ducks of some kind.

Hard to ID these birds from the photograph. I think they have the general shape of pelicans, which are found on Australia's west coast. Were they large birds?
