Rafflesia pricei
parasitic bloom about 16" in diameter, faint stench of rotting meat, the plant has no stems, leaves or true roots
montane rainforest
I spotted my first rafflesia hiking in a rafflesia reserve a few hours from Kota Kinabalu. I called the tourist office to see if there was a rafflesia in bloom. As luck would have it, one just opened that morning. I checked out of my hotel and was on the next bus there! Anyone really interested in Rafflesia should pick up the amazing book - Rafflesia of the World by Jamili Nais, it's slightly outdated now but still a fantastic book.

I didn't spot this one on the way to the summit, but in the same kind of general area.
This was where I was looking too, on my way to the sumit of Mt. Kinabalu : )
