Aldabrachelys gigantea/Dipsochelys dussumieri
Aldabra giant tortoise on Changuu Island, Zanzibar
Grassland, low scrub, mangroves
Originally from the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, this is one of the largest tortoises in the world. The average male is about 250 kg, with a carapace 120 cm in length. This isolated population was introduced to Zanzibar (Changuu Island) at the beginning of the 20th century. According to a local ranger this individual is about 100 years old. The 4th shot shows a tortoise dropping next to the photographer’s foot…

Great spotting Daniele!
Thanks Daniele and Welecome for sharing such amazing Organisms....
Thank you Ashish! The most wonderful and humbling experience when you meet with one of these is to realize they are older than you!
So beautiful...
The beach on Changuu Island was full of those:-)
It's an item I know all too well. I work with this species and have scooped up A LOT of those!
Thanks Goody! That's the best I could think of rather than getting someone to take a picture of me next to the tortoise:-)
I love the 4th image. It wraps up the series nicely. ;-)
