Description:

Also Known as Bayberry (Myrica cerifera) is an evergreen large shrub/small tree. The glandular leaves are long, have a leathery texture and serrated edges, and contain aromatic compounds. The fruit is the gray to light blue berries clustered on the limbs are a favorite of many bird species. This specimen was about 2 meters tall.

Habitat:

Spotted at Boggy Point Landing. Dune habitat

Notes:

Bayberry (Myrica cerifera) is used to treat sinus and chest congestion. Early American colonist used the wax covering the plants berries to make candles. The leaves of this plant have a wonderful fragrance which is why it is often associated with the holiday season.
