When I was in my second semester of grad school my wife (girlfriend at the time) found one of these in her backyard in North Louisiana. She called me freaking out, but I was at a meeting in AZ. I had her send me pics because what she was describing doesn't exist there. Sure enough, it was a California Kingsnake, exactly as she described. I had a buddy pick it up and he was relocated to a breeder's house.

Mark, awesome snake spottings! I grew up near Irvine in Mission Viejo, but was never lucky enough to come across a king snake in the area. Also, it looks like you have a nice beetle on the bottom right of your photo!
