Common Hollyhock

Alcea rosea

Description:

So my church has a gardening group and right now the hollyhocks are flowering! Hollyhocks flower in a variety of colors, this white one is actually right next to a pink one that hasn't flowered yet. Hollyhocks were brought in as ornamentals in the 15th century. Popular because they can easily grow from seed (and self seed themselves). Hollyhock has use in herbal medicine as a laxative and moisturizer, oddly enough.

Habitat:

Native to China but introduced to Europe and North American in or before the 15th century as a popular ornamental plant.
