Gray Hairstreak

Strymon melinus

Description:

This is a small, dove-grey butterfly with a tan/orange 'hat' and black facial stripes. The back edges of the wings are decorated with a line of alternating rectangles of white-and-black and tan/orange. There's a large orange spot at the near tip of the back wing, perhaps as a fake eye-spot. The antenna seem to have a black-and-white striped look. It's hind end seems to mimic it's front end, to some degree, perhaps to confuse predators. It looks very soft and fuzzy.

Notes:

I was out in my little yard to take pictures to put up on Facebook and imagine my surprise to see this astounding beauty perched confidently in the lofty heights of my dill.
