Rusty Crayfish

Orconectes rusticus

Description:

I spotted this organism, which I believe may be some type of crayfish (though I am unsure), lurking in the shallow and slow-moving water under a bridge at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It seemed to prefer and try to move towards the shade.

No problem!

Correction: I believe it is an Orconectes rusticus, not Orconectes propinquus.

Thank you very much, valgaavmiko! Based on my research, I agree with you on the classification of Orconectes, and I believe that the species is Orconectes propinquus. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures aside from just the three. Thanks again for your help!!!

Hi Julianna! Right off the bat, I would say it is probably an Orconectes sp. (there are 4 species in Michigan). It is difficult to ID most crayfish with certainty without being able to see the dentition on the claws. Do you have any other pictures that might show it?

Hi JuliannaM,iam not a specialist in the matter,my advice to you is to do two things, first ask for elp on the id on the Nature chat, second go to the google and se images of north american fresh water crayfish species and iam sure you will find a mach.
Good luck and welcome to Project Noah

Would someone mind helping me identify this organism? It seems to be some sort of crayfish, though I am unsure. It was lurking in the shallow and slow-moving water under a bridge and preferred and tried to move towards the shade. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
