Thanks for the ID Shelley! I knew my ID was off. Maybe the photo is from a zoo. We don't have Mandarin Ducks in NC, as far as I know.

I think it's a wood duck but some colors look odd. No red eye but maybe it's just the light or not quite in breeding plumage? Was the duck in the wild?
