Protea cynaroides

Description:

The National Flower of the Republic of South Africa. By far the largest flower of the protea family. Flowers all year round.

Habitat:

Moist sandstone slopes in the western, south western and Eastern Cape.

Notes:

These flowers are simply so large it always seems a surprise to find one and because they can flower throughout the year you are never quite sure when you will come across one of these magnificent blooms..
