Double Collared Sunbird

Cinnyris chalybeus

Description:

Common endemic sunbird of Southern Africa. Distinct irridescent plumage on head, females dull brown. Purple/red double collar visible from the front. Primarily eats insects and nectar. This specimen, sitting on a yellow pincushion protea has the benefit of both snacks available at the same time.

Habitat:

Forest, Fynbos and Karoo shrublands.

Notes:

This specimen was eating insects attracted by the blooming yellow pincushion proteas.
