Calotes calotes
The lizard has a bright green dorsal coloration, usually with 5 or 6 white, cream or dark green transverse stripes, however these are changeable. Often the stripes continue on to the tail. The head is yellowish- or brownish-green whereas the male develops a bright red head and throat in the breeding season. The underside is a pale green, the tail is light brown.
monsoon forest, dry scrub
Spotted this lizard resting on a shrub on the trail to the treehouse in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. I spent 3 nights in the treehouse. My guide slept on the balcony. I really wanted to do a night hike in the sanctuary but it was not allowed. We saw prints of leopard here and at night we heard elephants in the river right below the guesthouse.
