Mourning cloak butterfly

Description:

Large maroon butterflies with wings bordered with a yellow fringe. They look like drab grey laves when rested but when flying they reveal blue spots. With age, the yellow colour fades to white.

Habitat:

Incredibly huge range from northern tundra to Mexico, Also found in Europe, Russia and Japan. Lives in woodlands and forests.

Notes:

This butterfly is unusually early to wake up in spring and thrives on the early blossoms. In its european range, it is also know by the name Camberwell Beauty.
