Redback Spider

Latrodectus hasselti

Description:

This appears to be an immature female redback spider as it is brown in colour. Mature redback spiders are jet black in colour. She was almost 1cm in size. Distinct red stripe on abdomen.

Habitat:

Found this spider inside my shed door. Redbacks like dry warm areas to lay their eggs and the shed is a common place for me to find these types of spiders.

Notes:

Redbacks are poisonous to humans but don't leave their web much so humans are only usually bitten if a body part brushes up against their web. There is antivenom available. If bitten, do not pressure wrap as this makes the pain worse. The venom travels slowly. Apply an ice pack and seek medical assistance.
