Beautiful find Morton 1905,congrats on the SOTD and thanks for sharing
Congratulations Morton1905, your Snake's-head Fritillary is our Spotting of the Day:
"Our striking Spotting of the Day has so many common names you don't know where to start! Fritillaria meleagris (family Liliaceae) is known as snake's head fritillary, chess flower, frog-cup, guinea-hen flower, guinea flower, leper lily, chequered lily and more, and that's just English. In Croatia, where this photograph was taken, it is know as kockavica. The genus name Fritillaria comes from the Latin 'fritillus', meaning dice-box, and may refer to the chequered pattern of flowers. Fritillaria meleagris is often cultivated in gardens but can be difficult to find in the wild; it is listed as endangered in many countries. This plant is native to Europe and western Asia, with grasslands in damp soils as habitat".
