Desert Christmas cholla

Cylindropuntia leptocaulis

Description:

Narrow branches with long spines. The fruits are bright red and remain on the plant all through midwinter, hence the common name of Christmas cholla. This plant was about 1 meter tall.

Habitat:

Spotted in the Chihuahuan Desert in southeastern New Mexico. 3000 ft.
