Damselfish

Description:

Also known as (Mediterranean) Chromis, there are many local names (most of them listed as Tags) for this small fish, but the one I heard most often in 'Crnej' (pronounced Tzrney, and meaning 'black'). This is small and oval fish, measuring about 10-12cm and appearing dark brown or dark violet-red in water, with some golden reflections. The colour fades away toward belly. Habitat:

This is a very common fish in Adriatic waters, occurring all along Croatian littoral. We observed it almost every day, in loose groups staying very close to shores. Here, on a popular beaches in a village of Dubrovnik riviera (Cavtat). The depth in this zone is between 0,5m up to 3m, and then descending sharply down to 10m. The sea bottom here is rocky, creating many crevasses and tunnels, and rocks are abundantly covered in algae. In those deeper waters, there are some large colonies of sea grass.
