Hoverfly

Melangyna sp.

Description:

A hoverfly I spotted feeding on the nectar of Isotoma anethifolia, the narrow-leaved isotoma.... https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/19... Exact species yet to be determined, but possibly a "black-headed hoverfly" of the family Syrphidae. It would have been roughly 10 mm in length, and with the exception of large, pale spots on the abdomen, colour was mostly black. 21/03/20 - Just stumbled upon another possibility.... Melangyna viridiceps, aka "common hoverfly".... https://lifeunseen.smugmug.com/Insects/F...

Habitat:

Spotted feeding on wildflowers in sclerophyll forest, in Girraween National Park, along the Peak Trail. Sections of the track were still damp from recent rain. Here's some park info - http://www.rymich.com/girraween/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girraween_...
