Flame Skimmer

Libellula saturata

Description:

The flame skimmer is a large orange dragonfly with orange spots covering the half of the wings closest to the body. Females are often more pale or tan.

Habitat:

Usually found around ponds, though they can also be found far from water.

Notes:

These dragonflies are incredibly common in southern Arizona. This one was guarding a tiny pond that formed in the parking lot of my housing complex when the drip system leaked one day. You can learn more about this species at: http://www.odonatacentral.org/index.php/...
