Brassica oleracea
I believe this is the champion variety (Please correct me if I'm wrong). They have proven to be formidable plants since the day they were stuck in a two-foot tall mound. Collard is a shortened form of the word colewort (cabbage plant), though it lacks the core head of leaves present in cabbage. Biennial where winter frost occurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collard_gre...), which it does in this region of the US. Very healthy and tasty, especially after frost.
I started these indoors from seed and planted them in spring 2010 in our vegetable garden: 1/3 topsoil, 1/3 peat, 1/3 humus manure. I gave them a bit of bat guano in may 2010.
Uncovered and completely neglected since the fall, they laughed at the winter snowfall and are larger than ever. I had to seriously thin them out over the weekend.

Somehow these started growing in my yard from birdseed past Winter and got yellow flowers on them.
