Colotis fausta
about 3 cm in length, light green with yellow spots outlined in red
spotted on the caper bush in my desert garden
Determination based upon location, hostplant, abundance, and comparative photos provided to Bernadette privately.
A genus name would be helpful; the list of butterflies in Egypt is quite small. Sinai even smaller. And after telling you that I haven't seen these cats this year....I found 3 on my caper bush this morning! All about 2 cm in length, a couple with very small spots. Will try to capture some new images later.
Yes, I recognize the genus, but need to know a bit more before deciding the most likely species. Thus, rather than keep commenting here, I'll contact you directly through email.
It was smaller, maybe 1 cm smaller. But I guess I thought because the spots were smaller that is was an earlier instar.
Bernadette, why do you say "earlier stage"? Was the cat in the two right-hand photos much smaller than 3 cm?
Hi EarlyStages, I 've added a couple of shots of what might - or might not - be the same species at an earlier stage. Not sure if they're helpful. I know all of the cats that like my caper except for this one! Which I haven't seen this year....would appreciate any help you could give in pointing me in the right direction!
