Spotting

Description:

This huge mushroom seems to have sprung up overnight. It's in the plant/tree box between the street and sidewalk in the middle of a Chicago neighborhood. You can see that it came up fast enough to leave the bark around it in a ring - and in an area where this many dogs are walked and squirrels live, the bark gets kicked around a lot out here. It's about 3 or 4 inches in diameter. It's been a crazy rainy spring and the last couple of days have gotten very hot. Right up a mushroom's alley, right?

I'll try to get one when I go back out in a bit. :)

Perhaps a Russula sp., but underside photos would be needed for ID'ing.
