Eastern Hognose Snake

Heterodon platirhinos

Description:

A small Hog-nosed snake basking in the sun.

Habitat:

Found in Crex Meadows, Wisconsin by some ponds.

Notes:

Hog-nosed snakes are not constrictors. They can flatten their heads to look bigger and they also will play dead. Eastern hog-nosed snakes consume amphibians, mainly toads, but they will also eat small mammals, birds, birds eggs (ground nesters), insects, lizards, snakes, and carrion.

Very pretty photo! Please add to the Center for SnakeConservation mission to help document all the snakes in the US. Thanks! http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1202...
