Geoffroy's spider monkey

Ateles geoffroyi

Description:

One of the four species of monkey native to the forests of Costa Rica, spotted here in the Corcovado National Park. See the four strong hook-like fingers; the thumb is vestigial. See the use of the prehensile tail in the second shot.

Habitat:

Rainforests, semi-deciduous forests and mangrove forests. Geoffroy's spider monkey is listed as "Endangered" by the IUCN, mostly due to habitat loss.

Notes:

These were difficult shots. There’s little light, the animals are high in the canopy and never still. Not to mention the half-eaten fruits dropped on the photographer. Really, all excuses to go back to Costa Rica.
