Gray Four-eyed Opossum

Philander opossum

Description:

Dark gray back with paler belly. Get their "four-eyed" name from the white spots above their regular eyes. Didn't expect to see anything like this on my recent trip to Mexico, was a nice surprise!

Habitat:

Walking around a shallow cave at night looking for snakes, I happened upon 3 of these guys. Cave was in a depression in the jungle, about 50 meters from the ocean.

Notes:

At first I only saw two and were trying to figure out what the heck they were. They weren't moving very fast and didn't seem to be too bothered by me, so figured I should take pictures to try and figure out what they were. While following around one of them, I saw this other guy sitting about eye level in a tree, just staring at me. I think my headlamp was blinding him because he never moved, even when I got decently close. After a few photos I left them alone and they went on their way.

Thank you! The last photo is actually the first one I saw, he was just walking around the cave. The guy sitting on the tree never moved, even when I was done :)
