That's why they keep the trunk shorter.

Great, thanks Joseph. I actually keep my fairly short and pruned to encourage to trunk to grow fatter. The swollen base of mine is about 5" in diameter. It flowers all the time too.

Yes Dan leafs are very helpful to identify species of shrubs and herbs correctly.

I will. I did take a picture of the whole tree that had been zealously pruned :)
