Jackfruit is the world's second largest tree fruit, up to 80lbs (34kgs). One pic is of a cultivated Jackfruit, the other pic is a wild jackfruit, which grow much smaller.

This is the largest Jackfruit I have ever seen. I spotted it for sale at a roadside stall near Lake Taal in southern Luzon. The wild jackfruit was spotted in Harau Valley in Sumatra, Indonesia in dec. 2002.

I don think these fruits ends with fell from tree, they are always consumed by Humans or mammals in wild.
The sap inside is very sticky and gets to be a mess. I looked up preparation on YouTube and found a very helpful video. Oil is the key - either vegetable or olive - and you put that on your knife and cutting board before slicing into the fruit. That helps A LOT. I also chose to wear latex gloves to keep the sap off my hands. Then, when you've tackled that issue, you get the job of separating the edible parts from the inner flesh and have to remove the seeds. It's a lot of work but once you get a rhythm going it's not so bad. It would be great for a party because you end up with quite a bit of food and it's hard to eat it all. I found that it's not nearly as good on day two.
It's nice to see an older spotting come around again, this one had quite the thread going on it before. Chun, I would say that Jackfruit is more deadlier than a falling durian, as they can get much bigger, though are not as spiky. Ashish is right, Jackfruit is the largest tree fruit. Aaron, we can get a bit of Jackfruit, but I've never prepared it. I don't mind eating it fresh but I've had it in some curries in Asia and it was delicious.

I love jackfruit but it's expensive here. Our Asian markets sell it by the pound and most of the weight is the part of the fruit that you don't consume. The smallest I could find for purchase was around 5 Kg (11 pounds). It's also very messy to prepare. Good stuff, though!
Xun, we have these fruits in Brazil too (they were brought by the portuguese). Once I saw one with 15 Kg (34 pounds)!

The Jackfruit is very tasty vegetable and used before get ripe and it will be hard. It chopped into small pieces (except sticky white gum full core bar) and boiled. Seeds need to be freed from plastic type skin. Smashed seeds are used in various recipes like vegetable and curries as seasonal daily meals. In India Jackfruits are used in daily meals in all states. About 30-40 various type of recipes available in India with Jackfruit.
zulkifly, I stayed in Malaysia for 6 yrs and enjoyed nangka too, but love your famous Dorian.
we call it nangka/langka too in the Philippines! I think we got that name from you guys..

It is considered fruit. It has a fruity smell when its ripe( you know it then its ripe) there is no much sign of it being ripe unless the smell. once open, ripe jackfruit has a yellow color, its ready to eat then. Its has resin quit a bit so we usually put a bit of oil on our hands to protect from resin. But if its not riped but mature it is a vegetable, and yes it is delicious with coconut milk! The skin should be striped off its not edible.

if it's ripe you can eat it right away, and you can also eat the seeds, but you have to dry them under the sun and cook them.. the seed tastes nutty..
if it's raw you can cook it.. here in the Philippines it's usually cooked with a coconut milk :-)

Thanks, very useful information, I am from Mexico, I could not imagine that it was growing in Nayarit, but you know the weather in Mexico is so good and our land is so rich that you can grow almost everything there

I live in the Pacific coastal area of the Mexican state of Nayarit. Although this is a heavily forested and mountainous area, agriculture is big. We produce mostly coffee, mangos, and pineapple in our rich volcanic soil.
Cultivated fields are everywhere the terrain is flat and not being used for pasture or orchards. For the last few years, pineapple has been the most popular cultivated crop, but this will change when something else becomes more profitable.
There is a longer term investment in mangos because of the time required to establish a producing orchard.
Yucca is not rare here but it is not grown on a large scale. It is more usually seen in the yards of rural homes. Most people do not buy a whole fruit because it is so large, only a fraction could be consumed before it spoiled. It also makes a big slimy mess when the fruit is opened to separate the sections of bite sized fruit. And, as I said earlier, the flavor is not enjoyed by everyone.
When it is in season, the fruit sections are often seen for sale at roadside fruit stands. Sometimes they are packaged in small plastic bags, but more usually arranged in one layer on a styrofoam plate, covered with clear plastic wrap. You just pop a section in your mouth and crew the yellow pulp from the large white seed.
Yucca grows on small trees; too small to produce useable lumber.
To directly answer your question, I can say that it is grown throughout the coastal areas of Nayarit. There doesn't seem to be any great challenge to grow it. I would be surprised if it did not grow easily throughout Mexico, but I cannot with certainty, comment on the distribution.

Yes Tom Long back Mexico has its own species of Jack fruits. Like Mango, Litchi, Guava, Custard Apple, Pomegranate, Banana, Melons(many), Papaya also as usual like in other tropical countries.
