Steller sea lion

Eumatopius jubatus

Description:

large, barking sea mammal with small ears

Habitat:

rocks in Yaquina Bay, Oregon

Notes:

This picture only includes bull sea lions, which congregate and fight on any available pull-out in the bay. The oldest, most aggressive get the high spots; the youngest pups sometimes don't ever get to leave the water. The girls congregate at Sea Lion Caves (maybe elsewhere, I don't know), and the bulls go looking for them in August. Their barking can be heard for at least a mile.
