Greater Knapweed

Centaurea scabiosa

Description:

A native European field flower with a thistle-like purple flowerhead, and purple bracts forming a crown around the central flower. Bees and butterflies love it!

Habitat:

Dry grasslands, hedgerows and cliffs on lime-rich soil.

Notes:

The only known foodplant for caterpillars of the moth Coleophora didymella. The deeply dissected alternating leaves help disambiguate it from other centaureas. Picked up from a nearby field and photographed in the home studio as it wouldn't stay sill in the strong wind!
