They do look similar, Krista!
It's a caterpillar in the Limacodidae - the slug caterpillar moths (http://bugguide.net/node/view/131/bgimag...). I found one that looks very similar here in the eastern U.S.: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/738....
I´ve never seen anything quite like that...
