Masked Hunter Nymph

Reduvius personatus

Description:

The masked hunter (one of the assassin bugs) nymph is very tiny, moves slowly, and isn't very noticeable. It's covered in sticky "hairs" that attract and hold lint, dust, etc. This may serve to reduce predation.

Habitat:

Found in our house on an orchid that I had just bought. These insects are not native to our area and is the only one that I found.

Notes:

This is one of the more bizarre insects that I've found in our area. I had photographed it nearly a year ago, but was unable to identify it until last night when I stumbled across a reference while researching another person's Unknown Spotting here on Project Noah.

A bit similar to the Mealy Bug killer.

That's so neat, Gordon! I'd have just assumed it was a piece of dirt stuck on a leaf... incredible!
