Eastern Lubber Grasshopper

Romalea microptera

Description:

Habitat:

Found in masses on a swampy island in the Little PeeDee River in SC.

Notes:

These heavy bodied grasshoppers were surprisingly clumsy and docile. They did not hop, but instead walked along the sand and swamp floor slowly, often toppling over any branches or leaves in their way.
