Eastern Lubber Grasshopper

Romalea microptera

Description:

Adult measured approx 3-4 inches long. Brightly colored yellow and black with small red colored wings. Nymph approx 1 inch long and black with yellow stripe on the dorsum.

Habitat:

Found in masses on a swampy island in the Little PeeDee River in SC.

Notes:

These heavy bodied grasshoppers were surprisingly clumsy and docile. They did not hop, but instead walked along the sand and swamp floor slowly, often toppling over any branches or leaves in their way.
