Giant clam

Genus Tridacna

Description:

A giant clam spotted at the Agincourt reef, Great Barrier Reef, like the 2 previous spottings. A very large shell (about 1 m), fluted with 5 folds. Brightly coloured with green and purple. There are 9 species of Tridacna a the Great Barrier Reef, help with ID appreciated! I am thinking maybe Tridacna derasa.

Habitat:

Coral reefs in warm seas of the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

Does the clam appear in part blurred to you? Yes, its lips are actually moving!

They are amazing aren't they? The most extraordinary thing is to see them move; you'd imagine they're mostly static...

Fantastic! I saw quite a lot of these in the Indo-Pacific too! They're so gorgeous :)
