Spiny Softshell Turtles

Apalone spinfera spinifera

Description:

Two Eastern Spiny Softshell turtles basking on a log in one of the large, sandy sections of Hickson Creek. These are big aquatic turtles with snorkel or pig-like snouts. The spines on the front part of the carapace differentiate this species from the Midland Smooth Softshell turtle.

Habitat:

Sandy portions of large freshwater creek/river.

Notes:

Extremely difficult to photograph. They dive in the water from their basking spots at the slightest movements in their surroundings. Very skittish.
