Amanita constricta
Shiny dark brown gilled mushrooms in 3 stages of development. They had the flaring volva, partial veil was absent, tiny scales on the stipe. None of them had any patches of universal veil stuck to the cap.
Pacific temperate rain forest near the coast in Washington State.
Found along the walking trail in Seaquest State Park.
Thank you CorduneanuVlad! My book indicates that A. vaginata is a species complex and I have chosen A. constricta as the closest of the 4 species shown.
