Common Butterwort

Pinguicula crystallina subsp. hirtiflora

Description:

Pinguicula crystallina subsp. hirtiflora is the only carnivorous native plant of mountain Olympus. It's necessary to say that Penguiculla physically thrives in soil that lacks nitrogen. Randomly during the evolutionary time there was a mutation that permitted to this beautiful plant to produce this sticky essence in order to <<catch>> the insects that stand to its leves and its body. In this way Penguicula achieved to absorb the extra nitrogen from the insects and gained an evolutionary advantage to an inhostile enviroment!

Habitat:

Dry and shadow areas. Soil lacks nitrogen.
