Calostoma lutescens
Found in various stages of development. It begins as a flattened yellow "flower" pressed close to the ground. Underneath this a "balloon" appears, and finally a knobby stalk pushes the whole thing several cm above ground.
About 8-10 populations found along an old logging road up Back Creek Mountain in Highland County, Virginia. Found in the company of the lichen British Soldiers.
Photograph taken by my husband, David Fernandez.
