Blue swimmer crab

Portunus pelagicus

Description:

A male blue swimmer crab spotted in the Eastern mangroves near Abu Dhai, UAE, a sensitive and highly threatened environment. Crab fishing in these mangroves is not allowed and our guide, pictured, released several of them from fishing nets. See the pair of flattened legs that resemble paddles on the second shot, which allow them to swim.

Habitat:

Widely distributed in the Middle East, eastern Africa, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Stays buried in the sand or mud most of the time.

Notes:

For more details on these mangroves see http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/634...

Beautiful fellow!
And yours is even still alive ;)
That boy is huge!
I am so glad that you have areas down there that are protected (and people actually heed the regulations - sort of)
