Semipalmated plover

Description:

The semipalmated plover is a small plover of about 14-20cm. These birds forage for food on beaches, tidal flats and fields. They eat insects, crustaceans and worms. The term "semipalmated" refers to its partly webbed feet. The specimens I saw were in their non-breeding plumage. In their breeding plumage, they have a clearly distinguishable black neckband.

Habitat:

Plovers are found throughout the world, with the exception of the Sahara and the polar regions, and are characterised by relatively short bills. They hunt by sight, rather than by feel as longer-billed waders like snipes do.
