Small Tortoiseshell

Aglais urticae

Description:

A tortoiseshell butterfly spotted in a mountain meadow. When opened the butterfly displays a striking array of colours, including a row of blue triangles on the rear edge.

Habitat:

Meadows, gardens; temperate Europe.

Notes:

Threatened resting individuals rapidly open their wings, flashing colours which have been shown to frighten inexperienced birds.
