Yes, they really do need a lot of area to roam, especially since they are browsers and love to eat a variety of grasses and plants. My alpacas cover several acres everyday.
That "strap" is a halter, and trust me, it wouldn't stop spitting. But I am worried about how tight it's fitted. Alpacas are obligate nose breathers (they can't breath through their mouths), so too much pressure on the nasal passage can cut off their air flow. At least it looks fitted high enough on the face to be on bone, and not soft tissue.

yeah I felt sorry for him :/ has a strap around his mouth so he cant spit either think he needs better caring.
The teeth desperately need trimming (not that they enjoy this activity - they have to be tied down and I've still gotten spit at)!
