Schizophyllum commune
Fuzzy brown shell-like fungus growing on a fallen log. The outer fuzzy structure looked like small stars. This is supposed to be a World Wide species with 28,000 separate sexes, all of which can interbreed. It forms a fruiting body which can last a long time, drying out and "splitting" during times of a lack of moisture, and rejuvenating to produce spores again when wet.
Fallen tree within heavy shrubbery along the highway.

Thank you Mark, that certainly looks right. I've never seen anyone eat this…..
The gills do seem to be in double lines…...
Looks like Schizophyllum commune. A close view of the gills would prove it. They would be in 'doubles'. A dangerous fungi to breathe the spores of but I believe they eat it in Mexico. !?
