Alpine Salamander

Salamandra atra atra

Description:

The reclusive alpine salamander is a shiny black salamander only found in central Europe. Uniformly black (including belly) with cone-shaped protuberances on the flanks. This species is actually fully terrestrial.

Habitat:

Central, Eastern and Dinaric Alps, from 800 to 2400 m. Rocks, wet forests, humid zones.

Notes:

The black salamanders are quite reclusive and spend most of their time hidden under rocks or wood. The rain will bring them out. The last shot is overexposed as to reveal the salamander's eyes: an entirely black animal is hard to photograph!

Thanks for your comment Saarbrigger. I see you're in Hungary. You're just off its ditribution range, but it is found in Austria.
