Luna Moth Caterpillar

Actias luna

Description:

I found an adult luna moth laying eggs on my sweetgum tree, but unfortunately later in the day I found her on the ground being eaten by ants before having laid all her eggs. She was still alive, however, but barely, so I moved her into my enclosed porch and put her in a pot with food that the larvae could eat such as sweetgum and persimmon leaves. A few of her eggs did fall out of her degraded abdomen before she died and a couple hatched. I moved them back onto the sweetgum tree.

Habitat:

Sweetgum tree in a suburban yard next to a forest
